As much as I love teaching social justice, black history, women’s history and overall inclusiveness in my primary French Immersion classroom, I know that it will always remain super important to teach the beloved alphabet.

Take me to the FREE FRENCH ALPHABET SAMPLER right now!

The alphabet is a staple in any early learning classroom! After all, we need to know our letter names, letter sounds, rhyming and syllables if we are ever to learn how to read, right?

So I’m taking it back to the basics today and showing you how I introduce new French Vocabulary AND the letters of the alphabet in my classroom while making it fun. Because if the kids aren’t having fun then they aren’t going to learn as much. It’s science.

French Flip Books

Flip books are my GO-TO way to reinforce all things French alphabet, new vocabulary, changing seasons, colours, international holidays… basically they work for everything!

They are print-and-go which means you don’t need to do any prep work. You can just print and go… hence the name lol wow I’m a comedian now.

I call them les livres à cachettes and you can grab a free sampler of the letters A-C here.

How les livres à cachettes work

Each flip book is on one sheet of paper. Have your students cut out the top rectangle, which will become the base of the book.

Make sure they don’t cut out the vocabulary word on the top right of the book. They’ll need to glue or staple that part ;) I’ve definitely had kids make that mistake before. If they do, it’s no biggie. Just make sure you have tape handy.

Then have them cut out each of the flip book pages and staple them together. You can choose which of the 6 versions of the booklets you’d like to do with your kids. There is a colour version, black and white, black and white with tracing letters, blank dotted line, no word and no picture.

Once the flip book has been coloured, traced and stapled it is ready to go!

ways to use free alphabet booklets
